Katarina Wit started skating when she was five years old. She was only five when her talent became evident, and at the age of Karl-Marx-Stadt she enrolled in a school specifically for kids with athletic abilities. Her coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt was able to make her debut season in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Since then, Witt's elegance and grace have caught the attention of everyone. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt came through a closely fought contest to win the women's figure skating gold medal. She won a much closer competition four years later. Her free skate was a loss, but her gold medal came from the performance she put during both compulsory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt became the very first repeat woman to win the women's figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her success as a film actor. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. The team finished seventh, but she wowed the crowd despite not winning a medal. The year 1995 was the year that Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
